ND at gun show in Sandy

KSL news reported an ND at the gun show held in Sandy on Saturday.

Fair use excerpt:

The buyer was interested in a Colt .45 handgun, Carriger said. The seller had all of his weapons zip tied and the potential buyer asked him to cut the zip tie so he could further examine the gun.

"He manipulated the slide, not realizing there was a magazine in the gun. After manipulating the slide, he did notice the magazine and hit the release and took it out, unknowing that he racked a round into the chamber. He then pointed the gun down at the floor and pulled the trigger," Carriger said.

One shot fired, striking the concrete floor.

Concrete bits from the floor hit two teenage boys who apparently did not require medical attention.

Ignoring the reporter's mistake of what typically constitutes a "Colt .45 handgun", several layers of mistake here.

There should not have been live ammo near guns being offered for sale. Seller should never have consented to cut off the zip tie; buyer should not have asked. Buyer should have been certain the gun was clear before handling. He should have been pulling the trigger.

That all said, this is a good reminder of a couple of things.

1-Any ND like this is going to be newsworthy. I've been in the SL area for 20 years. I think these shows are held at least twice a year. That is some 40 shows without any incident. Guess what the legislature will talk about this session when pro-RKBA bills come up.

2-A gun show is a truly unique environment for firearms. With the most rare of exceptions, there is no "safe direction" to point a gun inside a gun show. There mere act of picking a gun up off the display table will almost always result in pointing that gun--at least momentarily--at someone or something that the person holding the gun really does not want to put a hole in. Extreme care is warranted. And some rules that would be offensive in most other environments are probably not out of line.

No charges are expected in this case. But the seller and buyer should both be banned by the operator of the gun show from all future events, IMO.
